FemPower: gender equality in the clean energy transition

The Erasmus+ Project FemPower (2022-2024) was created with the aim of increasing the presence of women in the energy sector and strengthening their role in the ecological transition.

The field of Clean Energy Transition (CET) - crucial for tackling global climate challenges - is still characterised by a significant underrepresentation of women. FemPower intends to address this gap by promoting a systemic approach that integrates the gender dimension in energy research, education and professional development.

Project Objectives

Objectives of the FemPower project

FemPower aims to:

  • increase female representation in the field of energy transition;
  • supporting and empowering women already active in academia or the labour market;
  • gender mainstreaming in research and development in the field of Clean Energy Transition.

The actions included in the project include:

  • mapping the gender gap and energy situation in partner countries;
  • the development of methodologies and tools for gender mainstreaming in the CET sector;
  • the realisation of transversal open educational resources, including a MOOC, an interactive map and a checklist for higher education institutions;
  • the definition of inclusive methodologies for co-creation in international and cross-sectoral contexts;
  • the development of inclusive STEAM educational methodologies in the field of CET;
  • the design of inclusive STEAM activities for secondary education;
  • the creation of the network Fem to FemPower Peer Learning Network to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project results.

As part of the project, METID contributed to the development of the MOOC “Gender Equality in the Clean Energy Transition”.”, available on the Polimi Open Knowledge.

Green Soft Skills for transitioning towards a Sustainable Future

How increasing female representation in the clean energy sector can act as a catalyst for innovation and ultimately lead to a more successful energy transition.

The course addresses the issue of women's under-representation in the energy sector, offering an insight into the challenges and opportunities for women in the Clean Energy Transition, through the experiences and contributions of female researchers and practitioners.

The MOOC has a total workload of 25 hours and is self-paced, allowing participants to progress at their own pace and interact in the forum until the end date of the course.

The MOOC is provided by the Politecnico di Milano and is the result of collaboration between the FemPower project partners:

  • Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece)
  • Center for the Promotion of Science - CPN (Serbia)
  • Diotima Centre for Gender Rights & Equality (Greece)
  • TU Delft (Netherlands)
  • Cyprus University of Technology (Cyprus)
  • Universidad del País Vasco (Spain)

The MOOC is one of the outputs of the project FemPower
(Grant Agreement No. 2021-1-EL01-KA220-HED-000030178).
