MOOCs - Massive Open Online Courses

What are MOOCs?

MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are open and accessible online courses designed to offer flexible, interactive and high-quality learning experiences. They represent one of the most effective tools for complement traditional classroom teaching, helping to make learning more personalised, inclusive and sustainable.

They are fundamental allies of the innovative teaching. They do not replace the face-to-face lesson, but enhance and enrich it, making it possible to combine the advantages of online learning with the power of face-to-face discussion.

The role of METID

At METID, we support teachers and content experts at all stages of idevising, designing and implementing MOOCs, offering methodological, pedagogical and technical accompaniment.

In particular, we support teachers in defining the learning outcomes and the evaluation strategies, in the choice of methodological approaches more suitable for online learning and in the writing teaching storyboards.

We also take care of the definition of teaching materials and their graphic and technical realisation, we also handle the production of digital content, graphics and videos to ensure effective, accessible and high quality learning experiences.

Smart Learning Design

MOOCs and the Smart Learning Design method

We support teachers in theintegration of MOOCs within face-to-face and blended learning, enhancing its potential through the Smart Learning Design Method (in-depth study Smart Learning Design), developed by METID. MOOCs are thus not designed as isolated contents, but as fully integrated elements of a broader and more coherent learning experience, in which online and classroom talk to each other in an intentional and complementary way.

MOOCs are effective tools especially with regard to the collection of low-interactivity content, i.e. the acquisition of information, concepts, methods, strategies and processes through listening, reading or viewing resources, because they allow the learner to independently explore content within a carefully designed pathway to facilitate understanding and consolidation.

This mode allows freeing up time in the classroom for more experiential activities and to high cognitive impactexercises, discussions, group work, reflections and moments of metacognition, thus fostering deeper and more conscious learning.

The use of MOOCs is not only a technological choice, but a educational strategy. Technology, in fact, only gains value when integrated with sound pedagogical approaches and careful design of the learning experience.

Design and Develop High Quality MOOCs

We created the MOOCMOOCs about MOOCs: Design and Develop High Quality MOOCs, available on Polimi Open Knowledge (POK), to guide teachers and instructional designers in the creation of effective online courses. The course explores the The role of MOOCs in blended learning and the Smart Learning Design method, illustrating the key design phases - from the analysis of the objectives and the target, the definition of learning outcomes and the evaluation strategies. It also delves into multimedia content production techniques, with a focus on video, and shows how new technologies and artificial intelligence can support the design process. It is part of the Smart Learning Design series, together with MOOCs Smart Learning Design - A visual method for designing effective in-person and online learning experiences. and Spaces and Technologies for Smart Learning.
