Teacher training

Teacher training courses

We promote the development of innovative teaching at the Politecnico di Milano through training courses for teachers, consulting on advanced teaching methodologies and support in the design, implementation and monitoring phases of training activities.

I. Advanced strategies for designing effective teaching: from theory to practice

Meetings dedicated to instructional design as a strategic process: from the analysis of expected learning outcomes to the integration of cognitive approaches and digital tools. The aim is to offer teachers a practical and theoretical framework to build more effective, engaging and coherent teaching.

  • New routes of instructional design: planning according to expected learning outcomes
  • Cognitive psychology at the service of the lesson: design techniques that take into account how we “work”
  • Digital innovation and open education: integrating MOOCs and Podcasts in education

II. Activating student learning and motivation

How to make students protagonists of their own learning by stimulating attention, memory and motivation. Practical strategies are proposed for designing active classroom activities and for providing targeted feedback even in contexts with large numbers.

  • Understanding memory and attention to enhance active learning
  • Active learning in action: designing fast and effective classroom activities
  • Motivating students with autonomy- and competence-oriented strategies
  • Effective feedback in large classes: peer-review techniques and collective revision

III. Open Educational Resources and Creative Commons Licences

Meetings dedicated to the potential of open educational resources and Creative Commons licences, with a special focus on the opportunities offered by Generative Artificial Intelligence. It will be an opportunity to rethink design and assessment in an increasingly innovative educational context.

  • The new frontiers of learning with Generative Artificial Intelligence
  • Designing innovative courses with GenAI support
  • Assessing in an AI-enabled era: equity and innovation in assessments

IV. Public speaking for teaching and beyond - Classroom management and effective communication: Public Speaking for PoliMi lecturers

Communication is a fundamental competence for those who teach. In these meetings we provide tools to develop presence, clarity and authority, helping teachers to manage both the classroom relationship and the unexpected, turning them into moments of fruitful interaction.

  • Presence, use of voice and body language
  • Managing contingencies and interacting with students

V. Active learning tools: new functionalities and opportunities

Technology can become a valuable ally in making teaching more dynamic and collaborative. In these meetings, we present practical and immediate tools, from interactive apps to digital whiteboards and the use of participatory videos, to enhance student engagement.

  • Launching dynamic classroom activities with Wooclap: practical techniques
  • Collaborating on digital whiteboards: creating synergies with Miro
  • Integrating interactive videos to enhance learning with Annoto

VI. ArtWell Therapy: feeling good in the classroom - Art therapy pathway to manage stress in the classroom

The well-being of the teacher is fundamental to building a positive classroom climate. In these meetings, we propose an art- and drama-therapy course to explore creative tools for expression, stress management and empathy, including through the innovative use of artificial intelligence.

  • Art therapy: matter for self-expression
  • Art therapy: AI as a new opportunity for expression
  • Theatre therapy: storytelling and autobiography
  • Theatre therapy: projective techniques to develop empathy

“Practical Approaches to Teaching Innovation”.”

A collection of concrete methodologies and tools to improve the quality of teaching. From starting with expected learning outcomes to designing fast and smart activities, these meetings guide teachers towards an effective and targeted integration of technology in their teaching.

  • Starting from the Expected Learning Outcomes for the effective design of a course
  • Formative and summative evaluation strategies
  • Designing fast activities: tools and resources to support active teaching
  • Smart Learning Design: integrating technologies in education (where they are needed and if they are needed)

Learning to learn: the path

Learning to learn

Student training - A project to accompany new freshmen as they enter the Politecnico di Milano

Learning to Learn is an experimental initiative dedicated to new freshmen at the Politecnico di Milano, The project was created with the aim of supporting students in the delicate transition from high school to university. The project, promoted by the Rector's Delegate for Didactics, Prof. Stefano Ronchi, was designed to offer practical and reflective tools useful for starting the university experience at the right pace.

A path to a methodical start

The project includes an initial series of four thematic webinars, produced by METID, to help freshmen develop awareness of their study methods and identify the most effective strategies for dealing with the main learning situations they will experience at the Politecnico.

The topics of the first four webinars are:

  • Strategies for learning in the classroom
  • Strategies for individual learning
  • Strategies for working in groups
  • Strategies for managing study time and sources of distraction

In addition to these four webinars, there are two other webinars, realised by the Equal Opportunities Service (PoliPsi and Multi Chance) of the Politecnico di Milano on the following topics

  • Strategies for study motivation and anxiety management
  • Specific strategies for possible learning difficulties or other fragilities

Meetings are held online, shortly before the start of the academic year, to accompany freshmen gradually and consciously through university life.

Asynchronous activities

In addition to live webinars, the course offers optional asynchronous activities designed to explore the topics covered in greater depth through online resources and tools provided by the University.

An initiative in synergy with revision courses

The Learning to Learn project complements the other orientation and accompaniment initiatives promoted by the Politecnico di Milano, in particular the maths and physics revision courses.

The two proposals complement each other: the webinars offer methodological and motivational support, while the review courses allow you to consolidate the disciplinary foundations necessary to face the start of university studies with serenity.

Learning to learn: the MOOC

Learning to learn

How to learn more effectively and consciously

Learning to learn today is becoming increasingly crucial at university and in any course of study and professional development.

In this course, you will find operational strategies and concrete hints to become more aware of your way of learning.

We will find out together how best to deal with the various situations you will encounter in your training: the classroom lessons, I individual study, but also the teamwork and the time management and sources of distraction.
For each of these situations, you will have at your disposal reference models, operational methodologies, self-assessment checklists, reflection grids, templates, infographics, action plans and other materials that will guide you in identifying your strengths and areas for improvement, to build a increasingly conscious, effective and long-lasting learning.
